IOSCO Asia Pacific Hub Webinar on Digitalisation and the Evolving Retail Investment Landscape
In conjunction with IOSCO’s World Investor Week 2022 and IOSCO’s report on Retail Distribution and Digitalisation, the webinar discusses changing trends in the online retail investment landscape, recent concerns arising in the regulatory perimeter and considerations for regulators in navigating the digital landscape.
The discussants in this webinar are James Angel from Georgetown University, Angelina Kwan from Stratford Finance Limited and Lilli Hattinga van ‘t Sant from the European Commission. The webinar is moderated by Mhairi Jackson, Chair of IOSCO’s Committee on Regulation of Market Intermediaries (Committee 3). Pasquale Munafò, Chair of IOSCO’s Committee on Retail Investors (Committee 8) provided introductory remarks on investor education as a complementary measure to supervisory regulation and investor protection.

IOSCO Asia Pacific Hub Webinar on Crypto/Digital Assets and DeFi – Look Before You Leap
In conjunction with IOSCO’s World Investor Week 2022, the IOSCO Asia Pacific Hub hosted a webinar supported by the IOSCO Board-level Fintech Task Force on Crypto/Digital Assets and DeFi.
The webinar discussed recent developments in crypto assets and DeFi and implications on investor protection and education. The Chair of IOSCO’s Fintech Task Force, Tuang Lee Lim together with senior regulators from Comissão de Valores Mobiliários, Brazil and the Financial Conduct Authority, UK provided observations on trends relating to crypto assets, regulatory issues and considerations as well as financial education initiatives and other measures undertaken in their respective jurisdictions to address fraud and scams prevention.

The Use of Technology in Securities Markets Enforcement, 28 September 2022
The IOSCO Committee 4 on Enforcement and the Exchange of Information (C4) held the first edition of its “The Use of Technology in Securities Markets Enforcement” on 28 September 2022 in a virtual format.
The conference is one of C4’s initiatives for raising members’ awareness of the importance of the application of technology in enforcement, and the current and emerging technological tools for combating securities fraud and misconduct. It is also intended to spark interests amongst members in developing and adopting their own tools and sharing their experience with others. It responds to the need for securities regulators to leverage technology to enhance their investigative capabilities to enable the delivery of more timely and effective enforcement outcomes, especially in the fast-evolving digital world.
The conference was well attended with over 300 participants from over nearly 100 IOSCO member organizations in attendance.
The conference featured presentations on “Importance of developing technological solutions for enforcement”, “Building capacity and capability for data analytics within your organization”, “Building your own Forensics & eDiscovery Department” as well as a case study on “Data analytics in an investigation into shares sale fraud”.

Virtual Case Study Session on Theranos, 6 July 2022
A Virtual Case Study Session on Theranos, “The Rise and Fall of Elisabeth Holmes: An Examination of the Evidence in the Criminal Trial of Unites States of America v. Elisabeth Holmes and Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani”, took place on 6 July 2022, between 14:00 and 15:30 CEST.
This hour and a half session provided rich and compelling teaching points for securities regulators – especially those that have responsibility for successfully bringing adverse actions against market participants and that requires the methodical and tedious development of a convincing and compelling case based on the evidence that is lawfully obtained and persuasively presented.

IOSCO Asia Pacific Hub Webcast on Crypto-Assets: Latest Developments and Regulatory Implications
Innovations related to crypto-assets offer opportunities for capital formation and enhanced access to financial services. However, the rapid developments of crypto-assets and its ecosystem pose considerations for regulators across the globe.
The webcast discusses latest developments in the crypto-assets space, including the emergence of Stablecoins, Decentralised Finance and Non-Fungible Tokens, and the regulatory implications of these developments. The webcast also reviews current regulatory approaches to crypto-assets and measures to enhance investor protection.
The panelists are Abigail Ng, Executive Director of Markets Policy & Infrastructure, Monetary Authority of Singapore and Henri Arslanian, Adjunct Professor, University of Hong Kong.
